I did this sketch as an exercise in negative space drawing. Which basically means drawing the spaces in between things, rather than the outline of the things themselves. Since I managed to understand the concept I have found it much easier to draw complicated shapes. You have to look at the abstract shape and forget what the subject is. My lovely art teacher in California first introduced the concept to me and it took a long while for it to “dawn on me” what the hell she meant, but it makes drawing so much easier (especially complicated subjects) if you can master the concept. If you are interested in more information about the subject there is a fantastic book by Betty Edwards entitled: “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” which explains it and is a great book if you want to learn to draw.
